The Winter Film Festival at Citi Pond

The Winter Film Festival at Citi Pond is coming to an end this Monday the 13th. Their last movie will be the classic Disney film, Lady and the Tramp, which just came out of the Disney vault and released on DVD for a limited time! They’ll be having two different showings, one at 5:30PM and one at 7PM. Bundle up and enjoy the movie outside on the 900-sq foot screen. There will be hot beverages and yummy treats available for everybody inside the Celsius Restaurant and Lounge. The screen is set up at the 6th Ave & 41st St entrance right by the fountain. It’s not everyday you get to watch a movie in the park outside during winter, so grab a blanket and some hot cocoa and enjoy a classic movie night. NYC dog owners can also stop by Bryant Park and grab a “Dog Friendly NYC Guide” created by Disney! Monday Feb 13th 5:30 & 7PM. Enjoy!

“Weegee: Murder Is My Business” Exhibit at the International Center of Photography

Back in 2008, before PopUp was born, my teacher assigned us to spend at least an hour in the International Center of Photography that week. I had heard of it before and walked past it a lot, but I had never stepped inside. When I finally went, I loved it and stayed way longer than the assigned hour. Not only were the exhibits interesting, but the layout of the museum was fun too. Luckily, for us, they’ve always got something cool on display there. This time, you can head there to catch Weegee: Murder Is My Business. These pictures were taken by famed photographer Weegee from 1935-1946. Weegee, whos real name is Arthur Fellig, was a photojournalist who would follow the NYPD and FDNY to document the crimes and events that were happening around our city. The New York Times called his photography “…pictures that you can’t stop looking at … and don’t soon forget.” Thats sayin somethin, so head down to the ICP anytime before September 2nd 2012 to catch Weegee’s exhibit. ICP is located at 1133 6th Ave & 43rd Street. [To get there, take the B,D,F,M,7 to 42nd St/Bryant Park OR the 1,2,3,N,Q,R to Times Square.]

2012 Winter Starlight Music Series at Top Of The Rock

Every Wednesday in February is going to be like a mini party at the Top Of The Rock. The 2012 Winter Starlight Music Series is here! Wednesday nights until February 15th, from 6PM-8PM, you can enjoy live music while ALSO enjoying the 360-degree view of the world’s most iconic skyline from the Top of Rockefeller Center. There will be wine, champagne, and other refreshments available for you to purchase from AJ Maxwell’s Steakhouse during the performances.

PLUS, enjoy a romantic Valentines Day at the top of the city. All those city lights can be romantic. Thats why they’ve thrown in a special Valentines Performance, on Tuesday February 14th.

The Calendar of Performances:

Wed Feb 8th – Angela Workman

Tues Feb 14th [Valentines Day!] – Hans Holzen Trio

Wed Feb 15th – The Nick Bucci Band.

Tickets are $25 for Adults, $23 for Seniors, and $16 for children 6-12 years old. You MUST be 21 years of age to purchase that wine and champagne I told you about before, so have a valid ID. I’ve been 21 for less than two months, so I still get all excited about it.

Performances start at 6PM. Top Of The Rock is open every day from 8AM-Midnight. The last elevator to the tippy-top heads up at 11, so don’t be late. Top Of The Rock is located at 30 Rockefeller Plaza between 49th & 50th Streets + 5th & 6th Ave on the 67th Floor.

Caribbean Garden!

Take a break from this crazy winter weather and take a little day trip to the Caribbean. Especially since we got hit with this snow today, it’s perfect timing. The Caribbean Garden at the NY Botanical Garden in the Bronx just opened up today! One of my friends just came back from St Maarten, I was totally jel but now I can take a mini-trip to the Caribbean too so it’s fine. Until the end of February, you’ll have the opportunity to check out all different kinds of native Caribbean flowers inside the beautiful Haupt Conservatory. Red hibiscus, fuschia bromeliads, and orange crotons are just some of the flowers they have on display. Inside the glasshouse, you’ll be surrounded by palm trees and a relaxing beachy/desert landscape. The sooner you grab your tickets, the sooner you can get out of the snow and into your indoor Caribbean getaway. Tickets are $20 for adults, $18 for students/seniors, $8 for children ages 2-12, and free for kids under 2 years old. As always, Botanical Garden Members are free. CLICK HERE to get your tickets. Kids Food Festival at Citi Pond!

This weekend is the Kids Food Festival at Citi Pond! It’s a FREE event to gain awareness for & to help fight childhood obesity. What better way to spend a weekend than enjoying two days jam packed with fun activities and tasty healthy food choices?! At Bryant Park, you’ll find over 30 different kiosks with food samples and healthy food for sale, along with a “Pit-Stop Station” for changing your little one and checking your stroller. Your child can participate in the Balanced Plate Scavenger Hunt, where they’ll go from kiosk to kiosk to learn about healthy food choices that are still tasty. The first 1000 kids to finish get a fun goodie bag! Thats not all though! The International Motorcycle Show!

I love motorcycles. If I wasn’t a pocket-sized person and I had better upper body strength, I’d totally get my motorcycle license. I got the itch when we PoppedUp at the Motorcycle Safety School for a quick lesson. But, for now, I’ll just go with my dad to the Harley-Davidson store when he needs to get something for his bike and pretend that I can ride one. This month is the International Motorcycle Show at the Javits Center! From Jan 20th-22nd, spend the day looking at the latest bikes, dirt bikes, ATVs and scooters, as well as some vintage beauties. They’ve got some pretty sweet things going on there too – you can watch the Smag Bros perform never before seen stunts at their Smag Bros Stunt Show, digitally design your own bike at Kawasaki Design-A-Bike, test and improve your Motorcycle IQ at the Learning Curve, take a trip to the future and see some crazy bike designs at the Dream Pavilion, or celebrate the history of motorcycles at A Century Of Motorcycling. Theres a whole lot going on, so to type it all would be insane. The New American Wing at The Met!

The Met got a makeover! Well, not a whole makeover, but a brand new wing! Say hello to the New American Wing Galleries for Painting, Sculpture, and Decorative Arts. Opening January 16th, this brand new installation is based on the history of American art from the 18th Century through the 20th Century. The renovation on the second floor consisted of fixing up and enlarging 26 galleries. They added coved ceilings and skylights for natural light flow, but a huge plus was all the room they gained from the renovation, which makes space for the art to be placed and viewed in chronological order! The New American Wing is 30,000 sq feet, which allows the whole installation to be set up on one floor for the first time. The centerpiece of the whole exhibit is the famous painting Washington Crossing The Delaware, which sets the tone for the rest of the exhibit. Colonial Portraits, Civil War Art, the West, and American Impressionism are just a few of the themes found in this installation. Don’t get me wrong, I love Europe, but I really enjoy learning about American History so I’m excited for this exhibit to open. The New American Wing Galleries opens on January 16th at the Met!
