ghd It’s that time of the year again! When we, the public, find out if spring is right around the corner or if there’s gonna be six more weeks of arctic weather. Thats right – it’s Groundhog Day! Based off of an old Scottish poem: “If Candlemas Day is bright & clear, there’ll be two more winters in the year”, Groundhog Day began in 1886. Today, in 2010, it’s the 124th Groundhog Day on February 2nd. All across the country, groundhogs pop out of the ground to reveal our future weather. Here in New York City, we have our very own Groundhog Day traditions. At the Staten Island Zoo, NYC’s very own groundhog Staten Island Chuck come out of hibernation at 7:30AM to make his prediction. Afterwards, Chuck makes appearances throughout the day. The ceremony is free to attend, and you can even pay to have breakfast with SI Chuck paying $10 for adults & $5 for children. For more details visit the Staten Island Zoo’s website at www.statenislandzoo.org. Now, lets all hope Chuck gives us some warmth!
